The pair of maneless male lions terrorized the Tsavo region in Kenya between March and December of 1898 by killing an estimated 135 men. Most of the men were construction workers on the Kenya-Uganda Railway. They were led by Lieutenant-Colonel John Henry Patterson. Patterson killed the first of the lions (measured at 9 feet 8 inches) on December 9, 1898 and 20 days later the second was found and killed.
The skins of the lions were used by Patterson as floor rugs and then were sold to the Filed Museum in 1924 for a sum of $5,000. As you can see the lions have been reconstructed and are on permanent display along with their skulls.
