Old School All Google Maps All The Time Scavenger Hunt

Five and a half years, and 100,000 submissions after VirtualGlobetrotting opened its doors, we’re bringing you back to the roots of internet satellite imagery with a scavenger hunt focused entirely on the company that energized the industry — Google Maps Satellite imagery.

All valid submissions must be straight Google Maps Satellite imagery. No Bing, Yahoo, Birds Eye, Street View or 45 degree imagery.

Thanks to Kevin (kjfitz) for putting this together, and all of the moderators for helping with the submissions!

The hunt starts on Friday November 26 at 9am PST, and will last 10 days until Sunday December 5 at 9pm PST.

The total points you can find for this hunt is 129 (the biggest we’ve ever put on!). The user with the most points at the end of the hunt wins!

Looking for your scavenger hunt score? Check your Scavenger Hunt page for details.

Cash Prizes (Amazon.com gift certificates) for the winners are as follows:

  • 1st: $50
  • 2nd: $30
  • 3rd: $20

If there is a tie for first place, the the first person to get the points takes first place, and the others are ordered by the time they finished their last submission.

Good luck!

See the Scavenger Hunt page for more details

Scavenger Hunt! Starts Nov 26, 2010 @ 9am PST

Almost a year and a half after the last one, VirtualGlobetrotting will be hosting a Scavenger Hunt starting Friday, November 26 2010 @ 9am PST.

We’re sorry it has been such a long time since we put one of these together! Please come join in the fun with us on Friday.

Hint: We’re going old-school with this one, back to our roots. The entire hunt will be entirely Google Maps satellite views (no Street View).

See you then!

100,000 maps

Today at 11:16:24am PST, 5 years, 5 months, and 29 days after the first map was submitted, VirtualGlobetrotting reached an amazing milestone:

The 100,000th map was submitted!

Congratulations to Champion3 for submitting the 100,000th map!

And thank you, everyone, who has participated in our community by submitting maps, being a moderator, or even just stopping by.

This was also Champion3’s 1,719th map. Impressive!

I also awarded Champion3 a special Achievement:

* Note: The map’s number is 104,692 as there have been 4,692 maps that were removed from the database for various reasons.

VirtualGlobetrotting Achievements

VirtualGlobetrotting now has Achievements you can unlock by participating on the site and reaching certain milestones!

Take a look at the achievements I’ve unlocked:

For example, after you’ve submitted 10 maps, you unlock the Explorer badge:

After submitting 100 maps, you’re a Pathfinder!

Each achievement has several levels (and unique titles to go along with them).

The full list of Achievements is hidden, but you can see some of the achievements other users have by clicking on their Achievements tab.

In addition to Achievements, you can also hold titles, such as the King of a country or the Governor of a state if you have the most submissions for that location:

You can click on any of your Achievements to get more details about why you unlocked it, what level you’re at, and how to progress to the next level:

Military Scavenger Hunt

Kevin (kjfitz), one of the VGT moderators, has hand-crafted a Military Scavenger Hunt for our visitors. The hunt starts on Saturday February 28 at noon EST, and will last 14 days until Saturday March 14 at noon EST.

Scavenger hunts are contests to see who can find the most maps in a list of categories. To participate, you simply submit maps as normal, then select the scavenger hunt category you are submitting to. The category list for the Military Scavenger Hunt is here. Once a moderator approves your map, you automatically get points for that category.

The total points you can find for this hunt is 66 (medium size). The user with the most points at the end of the hunt wins! Looking for your scavenger hunt score? Check your Scavenger Hunt page for details.

Cash Prizes (Amazon.com gift certificates) for the winners are as follows:

  • 1st: $50
  • 2nd: $30
  • 3rd: $20

If there is a tie for first place, the $100 total in prize money will be distributed as such:

  • 1st person to get the high score: $50
  • All others who get the high score: Split the other $50 evenly

Good luck!
