the SR-71 has a buddyplane drone thingy. I think that's it

Ok. We have a definitive answer.

GMaps site tracking all remaining SR-71's. They have this one listed, with a little history. Entry SR-71A #61-7963 (CA) on the right of the page.

The "thingy" next to the SR-71 is a http://www.sr-71.org/photogallery/blackbird/d-21/">D-21 recon drone. The base in the photo is Beale AFB, home of the 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing which operated the SR-71 and still operates U-2.

You can indeed see a U-2 getting airborne near the bottom photo, as well as one parked just north of the SR-71 and another on the parking ramp to the west.

I have personally seen this aircraft on display there and they must have added the D21 drone within the last few years. It is quite interesting to be able to go right up to it and touch the aircraft itself.
The numerous small black jets are T-38 Talons used for chase aircraft for the U-2. At the north end of the base on the hardstands are two A-10 Warthogs slated for demolition by the resident munitions school.

google Earth reports co-ordinates as
39.08.44.27N 121.25.51.95W

And on the southern end of the runway is the airborne U-2 with shadow.....
39.07.35.64N 121.26.00.33W

Anyone know what is the object just to the north in front of the hangar?
kjfitz @ 2006-03-20 16:39:52
The fuselage and wing dimensions of the object north of the hangar match those of the U-2 straight to the south. I'd say it is a U-2 without wing pods or tail.

The only other Lockheed M-21 Blackbird is at the Museum of Flight at Boeing Field south of Seattle. It has the D21 attached. There is a cockpit you can sit in too. The mach guage goes to 10 !
