Mark Wattles, former owner of Hollywood video, had a dream of building one of the largest homes in the country. He tried to build it along the banks of the Willamette river just south of Portland Oregon. He tried but he ultimately failed. At over 50,000 sq. feet it would have in fact been one of the largest homes in the United States. An ongoing problem with the builder and in the end a lack of funding led to the shelving of the project. It was to include a gymnasium, a 4,000 sq. ft. pool, a 19-car garage, and a 10,000 sq. ft. master suite. It's been sitting unfinished since 1997.
