The house was originally built by publisher Thomas Longman but its most famous resident was the exiled Empress Eugénie, widow of Emperor Napoleon III of France. She lived here from 1880 to 1920. The house has been girls school since 1927 with additional buildings designed by Adrian Gilbert Scott.
