Tom Simpson dies on the Tour de France (June 13, 1965)

Tom Simpson (30 November 1937–13 July 1967) was a British professional cyclist, one of Britain's most successful of all-time. In the 13th stage of the 1967 Tour de France, he collapsed and died during the ascent of Mont Ventoux, aged 29. The post-mortem examination found that he had taken amphetamine and alcohol, a diuretic combination which proved fatal when combined with the heat, the hard climb of the Ventoux and a stomach complaint. A memorial stands close to the spot where he died and has become a pilgrimage for many cyclists.
