The Crowns Engine Houses

The Crowns Engine Houses at the former Botallack Tin Mine used to contain winding gear and pumps to prevent the mine from flooding.

The two houses are built at the base of the cliffs where the 2,500 feet long Boscawen shaft descended below the seabed at angle of c.30 degrees

The Upper Engine House (Pearce’s Engine House)) which was built in 1850 housed the mine’s winding engine.

The Lower Engine House (The Crowns Pumping Engine House) which was built in 1830 housed a steam pump which prevent the mine from flooding.

The Crowns Engine Houses are part of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site. It was added to the World Heritage List at the 30th Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Vilnius, July 2006.
