Wellstone Memorial

Memorial honoring the death of Senator Paul Wellstone, who was killed in a plane crash near Eveleth, Minnesota, along with his wife and one of his three children in October 2002, two weeks before he was up for re-election in the Senate. Had Wellstone been elected, it would have been part of a piece that could have made the Democrats the majority in the Senate at the time.

The FBI and NTSB both investigated the crash and the possibility of foul play. In the end, the crash was ruled an accident, with blame falling on the pilot and copilot, even though Wellstone was the recipient of numerous death threats leading up to the day of the crash.

The memorial is located about 2000 feet west of the actual crash site. There is a trail that leads from the memorial to the crash site.
