Deep Dive into History: The Sinking of the Titanic

Everyone has seen the movie and knows the story about the sinking of the Titanic, but few know the details about the ship’s creation and journey before it hit the fateful iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean on April 14, 1912.

Construction in Belfast, Ireland

The ship was dreamed up as the world’s largest ship, a luxury liner to move people between Europe and the United States in style. It was commissioned by the White Star Line of Britain, and built in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

When the Titanic and her sister ship the Olympic were built, no slips were big enough to build them. The ship was plagued by tragedy from the start, as eight men died during construction, which took nearly five years and cost $400 million in today’s dollars.

For years after the tragedy, Belfast did little to acknowledge the amazing ship or the tragedy of its sinking. However, the shipbuilding area was redeveloped as part of the city coming to terms with its history, and was turned into an area called Titanic Quarter.

Titanic Belfast Memorial

Shortly after the sinking, the people of Belfast raised funds to erect a memorial to the souls who perished on the ship. The memorial was moved in time for the centennial commemoration of the tragedy to the Titanic Memorial Garden. It includes the names of 22 men who perished on the ship.

Titanic Belfast Monument

After decades of downplaying the ties Belfast had to the doomed ship, the city opened a monument to the ship on the centennial of its sinking on the site of the old shipyard where the Titanic was built.

The monument building has more than 130,000 square feet of floor space covered with galleries, community facilities, and stories related to the construction and sinking of the ship.

Queenstown (Cobh), Ireland

The Titanic left its origin point in Southhampton, England on April 10, and made a few stops before heading into the Atlantic Ocean. It first sailed across the English Channel to Cherbourg, France. They picked up a few hundred passengers, and then sailed to Queenstown, now Cobh, in Ireland.

Here, the ship took on 123 more passengers. The Titanic then set sail for New York City on April 11. There is a memorial in the city to the tragedy, which lists the names of the passengers from Queensland; 79 perished and 44 were saved.

Wreckage in the Atlantic Ocean

Four days into the journey, the Titanic began to receive warnings from other ships that large icebergs were sighted in the area. That evening, the ship hit an iceberg and began to sink. No more than two hours and forty minutes later, the ship had gone down.

Of the 2,224 passengers and crew on board, only 338 survived. More than two thirds perished by drowning or going down with the ship. The ship remained unmolested at the bottom of the ocean for more than 70 years.

In 1985, the ship was recovered by an expedition, and since then, renewed interest in the Titanic and the people who were on her maiden voyage has increased significantly.

Cemetery in Halifax, Nova Scotia

Right away, efforts to gather the dead and provide them proper burials was undertaken by the ship line. While many people were buried at sea, at least 209 bodies were taken to Halifax, Nova Scotia. Those bodies who made it to Halifax were buried in cemeteries around the city.

More than 100 passengers were buried at Fairview Cemetery in a special section dedicated to the sunken ship. About one third of the bodies were not identified, and their markers have only their number and the date of the sinking.

There is a touching memorial to the “unknown child” who was later identified by DNA to be an 19-month old child who died along with his entire family.

“Unsinkable” Molly Brown

The Titanic was billed as a luxury cruise liner, but the ship was also used to ferry immigrants and laborers to the United States. In fact, the majority of passengers were second and third class passengers. Shockingly, the majority of those who survived were first class passengers. The disparity in survival caused an international uproar, and the insufficient amount of lifeboats led to international regulations that provided for safer shipping and emergency procedures.

One passenger who survived, and added fame and interest to the event was Molly Brown, a self-made millionaire and philanthropist. She worked to help people evacuate the sinking ship, and eventually got into a lifeboat. She attempted to get the lifeboat captain to pick up survivors, but he refused for safety reasons.

Once the rescue ship RMS Carpathia made it to port in New York City, Molly Brown was given the nickname “Unsinkable Molly Brown”. This moniker stuck with her her entire life, and she was memorialized in a play, movie, and as a character in the 1997 film Titanic.

These are just a few sites related to the tragic sinking of the Titanic. Even though it was more than 100 years ago, the event still resonates with many people. While many people died in the tragedy, it did have positive impacts on shipping travel. Regulations about lifeboat safety, evacuation protocols, and other safety measures are now a routine part of ship travel, saving countless lives over the years.

Kim and Kanye: The End of an Era

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have been a celebrity power couple for nearly a decade. Nicknamed “Kimye,” they have been together since April 2012. But on February 19, 2021, Kim filed for divorce.

Let’s take a look at their story, including some of their homes, and places that were special to them.

First Home Together in Bel Air, CA

Kim and Kanye were friends for about a decade before becoming a couple in 2012. In 2013, the couple bought an $11 million home in a gated Bel Air community.

The house had 10,000 square feet when the couple bought it, but they turned it into a 14,000 square foot Italian-styled mansion. They added a gym, indoor and outdoor pools, bowling alley, and a makeup salon, critical for a celebrity famous for being beautiful.

The couple sold the house in 2017, for about $18 million!

Later in 2013, Kanye proposed to Kim in the most over the top way imaginable. At AT&T Park (now Oracle Park) in San Francisco, he hired a full orchestra, and even had their families rush the field after she said yes. The rock was pretty hard to turn down–a 15 carat diamond ring!

The San Francisco Giants play at the field, and it’s used for other sporting events and concerts. The park opened in 2000. It sits on San Francisco Bay, making it a little chilly even in the summer, so if you come to see the Giants play, don’t forget your jacket!

Forte di Belvedere, Italy

Kim and Kanye were married at Forte di Belvedere in Florence, Italy, in May 2014. The fort was built in the 1590s The couple paid about $300,000 to rent the facility, and pulled out all the stops for the event. They had brightly colored horses, large feather decorations, entire walls of flowers and other elaborate details for the exclusive ceremony.

In spite of the huge costs associated with the wedding, the couple actually made money on the venture, as they sold exclusive rights to images and stories from the big day.

In 2013, the couple bought a $20 million mansion in Hidden Hills. The massive home on three acres immediately underwent seven years of renovations, totaling another $20 million.

When it was finished, the home has vineyard, mature trees, and gorgeous landscaped lawns. The home has a minimalist design, overseen by Kanye, who calls it a “futuristic monastery”. They own at least two neighboring residences, totaling at least seven acres.

It is reported that Kim will retain the home when the couple officially splits.

In spite of being a hip hop mogul, Kanye has always had a side that craved space, quiet, and peace. He channeled that energy into a massive ranching endeavor outside Cody, Wyoming. He spent $14 million on a ranch that has a restaurant, a saloon, horses, barns, and even a shooting range.

The Kardashian-West family spent much of their free time here in the last several months, riding horses, hiking, and riding around their property on ATVs. It was a welcome change from their LA lifestyle.

Kany’e Second Ranch in Cody, WY

Like everything else Kanye does, his ranching endeavors are extreme. He ended up buying a second ranch less than 100 miles away, for $15 million.

This 7,000 acre property was intended for some intense construction projects. In late 2020, he submitted plans to the building department to build a 52,000 square foot mansion, two 10,000 square foot underground garages, two lake houses, and a new septic system. He also wanted to build an amphitheater, but had permitting issues. With the pending divorce, a lot of these plans are now on hold.

Some report that Kim’s focus on criminal justice reform, Kanye’s campaign for president in 2020, and some of his other endeavors may have caused strife in their marriage. After working for months on their relationship, it was reported on February 21, 2021, that Kim had filed for divorce.

Hopefully, the family will find a way to make things work, whether it’s together or apart.

Raise a Glass, It’s National Beer Day

Today is National Beer Day in the United States! In honor of this great day, let’s look at some of the places around the world that help make beer so great, from the breweries to baseball fields.

Coors Brewery, Golden, Colorado

While you might think Golden, Colorado was named for the liquid gold it’s famous for, it was actually named after an early settler during the 1850s gold rush. These days, the city is world-famous for its brewery, which was founded in 1873. Now, the facility produces about 11 million barrels of beer a year!

The old brewery is the world’s largest single-site brewery, and still functions today. But, starting in 2024, major renovations will be made to the facility to increase production, reduce environmental waste, and be more efficient. So, if you want to see the brewery as it’s been since the 1950s, book your trip now.

Budweiser Clydesdale Horses

In the United States, one of the most iconic images in advertising is the Budweiser Clydesdale horses, pulling sleighs and wagons, working on the farm, and even developing special relationships with dogs.

The horses became popular after Prohibition was repealed, and now, the horses are mainstays of the company’s annual advertising campaign, especially during the Super Bowl.

The horses can been seen around the US when they go on tours, but most are housed at Grant’s Farm outside St. Louis, Missouri. The farm is open to the public, and people can see the Clydesdale horses, as well as many other kinds of animals. It’s a great place for a family to visit!

Happy Birthday Alec Baldwin

Alec Baldwin is a proud father of seven, Hollywood legacy, and philanthropist. He’s been in the acting business since he was 22, and has earned the reputation as a great actor (with a hot temper). But in the last few years, he’s had a renewed lease on life, with his wife Hilaria and their six kids.

Today, he celebrates his 63rd birthday, so let’s wish the dad, actor, producer, comedian, and musical narrator a happy birthday!

Amagansett, NY

It’s likely Alec is spending his birthday in his gorgeous farmhouse in Amagansett, in the Hamptons. His wife, Hilaria, and their six children live here full-time, especially because Covid restricts their travel. He spends time at his NYC apartment and another Hamptons home when he’s working to reduce exposure to the kids, but he would definitely come home for cake and ice cream, right?

The waterfront house was originally built in 1756, and has been remodeled and added onto over the years. Alec bought the house in 1995, and he and Hilaria undertook significant renovations after their marriage. They made sure the home has an open farmhouse feel that both pays homage to the era and area it was built, and makes raising their growing family as fun and as easy as possible.

When Alex started dating Hilaria in 2011, he bought a 12th floor penthouse apartment in the Devonshire House, in Greenwich Village. He paid $11.7 million for the 4,000 square foot home. Hilaria bought an adjacent apartment for an additional $1.2 million, bringing the home to close to 5,000 square feet.

As if that weren’t enough, he bought one more unit on the floor for an additional $1.3 million, to make a massive penthouse that has high-end appliances, marble and hardwood finishes, and other luxury amenities throughout.

Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts

A true New Yorker, Alec Baldwin has been involved in the city’s vibrant theater and music industries since the 1980s. He has been the host of the New York Philharmonic This Week, a weekly syndicated radio program, since 2009.

The program is recorded at David Geffin Hall at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. The hall had earlier been named Avery Fisher Hall, but in 2014, the organization renamed it as part of a fundraising campaign. David Geffin donated $100 million to Lincoln Center, and the hall was renamed after him.

30 Rock

While Alec’s career has spanned decades, most younger people know him for his seven season run as Jack Donaghy on NBC’s show 30 Rock, which is set at a fictionalized NBC television comedy show. Alec won several awards for his work on the show, from Emmys to Screen Actors Guild awards.

The name of the show came from the location of NBC’s studios, located at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, or “30 Rock.” The location is famous; the largest building at Rockefeller Center, which is an iconic part of downtown New York. Quintessential NYC activities like outdoor dining in the summer and ice skating in the winter all happen at the Center.

It’s fitting that the show that renewed Alec’s career was about NYC, as he’s a true New Yorker through and through.

Amityville, New York

Alec grew up in the Long Island town of Amityville, which has become famous in the retelling of a 1974 murder and subsequent haunting of the home where the murders took place.

The small town was the scene of a terrible murder when Ronald DeFeo Jr. killed the six members of his family in their home in 1974. A year later, another family moved into the home, but quickly moved out claiming the house had paranormal activity.

The story was turned into book, and then into a series of horror films that have made the town famous, or infamous. The house, while still easy to find, has been renovated, had its address changed, and resold, to discourage thrill-seeking tourists.

With his East Hamptons house and NYC penthouse, his wonderful family, and awesome career, it’s a safe bet that Alec will have a wonderful time celebrating his birthday today, no matter where he blows out the candles. Happy Birthday, Alec!

Unique Outdoor Vacation Destinations

If you’re hoping to have a vacation but want to stay outside and be socially distant, consider visiting one or more of these unique, crazy or downright ridiculous sites across the United States.

Mount Rushmore

While this site is among the most famous US places to visit, it’s a really odd landmark. Busts of presidents Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt are portrayed on the side of a mountain in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Each bust is roughly 60 feet tall, and sit in stark contrast to the blue sky, grey granite rock and green vegetation.

Mount Rushmore has been a part of popular culture since it’s creation, including being the location of the climactic scene in Alfred Hitchcock’s famous film North by Northwest starting Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint.

It was designed specifically to increase tourism to the area, and it has worked. Nearly three million tourists visit each year, mostly in the summer months. Visiting in the winter is less popular due to the rough winters of South Dakota.

Corn Palace

Not far from Mount Rushmore is the Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota. Known as the world’s only corn palace, it is a multipurpose facility for the community as well as a tourist destination for roughly 300,000 people each year.

The town holds a corn harvest festival in August or September, as well as an annual rodeo and polka festival. The palace is decorated with crop art, with designs crafted out of corn kernels and other grains, with new designs each year.

Touchdown Jesus

This University of Notre Dame site is not to be confused with the oddball tourist destination of a large Christ holding his arms up in a lake outside a church in Monroe Ohio. While both are works of art nicknamed “Touchdown Jesus” the Monroe Ohio structure burned to the ground in 2010.

The Theodore Hesburgh Library on the campus of Notre Dame has a large mural called “The World of Life” but because of the large Christ with raised arms at the top, it has become known as Touchdown Jesus. Appropriately, the mural is visible from the football stadium on campus, making it appear that Christ is giving the signal for touchdowns when a team scores.

Touchdown Jesus (Birds Eye)

You’d have to be a huge Notre Dame fan, football fan or both to put this at the top of your list, but if you happen to be near South Bend Indiana, you should certainly stop by.

Area 51

You can’t actually visit the place known as Area 51 because it’s part of a remote, top secret military base in the desert of Nevada, but that’s what makes it so intriguing. Thousands of tourists each year visit the area famous for holding remains of alleged alien encounters, unexplained sightings and mysterious activities.

A short drive from Las Vegas, Area 51 has been used for military testing of top secret aircraft including the U2 and OXCART. However, many believe it is the site where the remains from an interesting incident in Roswell, New Mexico are stored, as well as objects from other potential extraterrestrial encounters.

You can drop by the area and enjoy small town chatter, swap UFO stories and tour a museum, visit a gift shop, and if you’re lucky, leave with a few phenomenal stories of your own.

Celebrating Women’s History Month

March is Women’s History Month. In honor of all the amazing women who have come before us, let’s take a look at a few interesting and influential women from history.

Isabella of Castile

School children all around the world know about Ferdinand and Isabella helping Christopher Columbus discover America. But most don’t realize that it was Isabella who pushed to fund Columbus. She was an independent woman way ahead of her time.

Isabella of Castile was born in 1451, and from an early age, demonstrated a keen political instinct. She chose her own husband, Ferdinand, and ruled her lands of Castile independently. She and her husband pushed the last of the Moors out of Spain, started the Spanish Inquisition, and funded Columbus’s discovery of America. She and Ferdinand were buried in royal fashion at the Royal Chapel of Granada.

Isabella is a great example of a strong, independent woman, who never backed down in the face of adversity and challenging social norms.

Pocahontas

Pocahontas was a Native American born into the Powatan tribe around 1596 in what is now Virginia. As the daughter of the tribe’s leader, she had significant interaction with English explorers who settled Jamestown.

Her role in history is tied up in legend and lore, but she did marry an Englishman and establish several years of peace in the area. She eventually went to England to represent the “noble savage” to royalty and others. There, she passed away at age 21 while preparing to return to her homeland.

She was buried in Gravesend, but the exact location of her remains is not known. Nonetheless, a statue in her honor remains in the church, one of many memorials and honors for the young woman who bridged two cultures and gives pride to many indigenous girls around the world.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton

Elizabeth Cady Stanton is revered as one of the strongest advocates of women’s rights in the United States. She, along with Susan B. Anthony, fought for years for women to be given the right to vote, as well for as the abolition of slavery and equality in general.

She was born in Johnstown, New York in a prominent family, and given a well-rounded education. From an early age, she was involved in abolitionist movements. Her husband, Henry Brewster Stanton, was an abolitionist, and at their wedding she did not pledge to “obey” her husband.

Her family lived in Seneca Falls, which is where the first American women’s rights convention was held. Now, both Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Seneca Falls hold special places in the history of women’s rights. Elizabeth Cady Stanton reminds us that it’s important to fight for what you think is right, and to never give up.

When she gained momentum in her research into radioactivity, the University of Paris granted Marie Curie a laboratory where she and her husband could conduct their joint research. In her honor, the University created an Institute and has created several memorials to the great scientist.

She died an early death at 66 of causes directly related to the exposure she received while conducting her research. In fact, as her illness progressed, she even studied herself to document the effects of radiation on humans. She is a great example of a woman pursuing her dreams, not settling for a stereotype, and giving the world increased knowledge and understanding.

Hedy Lamarr

Hedy Lamarr was a woman who makes us think we can have it all. She was a gorgeous film actress, producer, and inventor who helped develop a system for torpedo guidance and increased airplane aerodynamics. In fact, her research into the frequency-hopping technology is now used in Bluetooth technology.

Lamarr was born in Hungary, fled an abusive marriage to France and eventually ended up in the United States, where she picked up on her acting career and starred in several popular films.

She was not formally trained as a scientist or inventor, but she constantly thought of inventions and ways to innovate. She’s an example that, no matter where you start from and what people expect from you, you can go your own way and do your own thing.

It’s Justin Beiber’s Birthday!

Happy Birthday, Justin! The superstar singer is celebrating his 27th birthday today, March 1. As we celebrate with him, let’s take a look back on the flashy birthday boy and how far he’s come.

Boyhood Home, Stratford, Canada

Justin was born in Ontario, Canada on March 1, 1994. His mom and dad never married, and he was raised largely by his mom. From an early age, he had a talent for singing and entertaining, and she helped promote him on YouTube and other sites.

Scooter Braun’s Home, Brentwood, California

Agent Scooter Braun came across Justin Bieber’s performances online and went all the way to Canada to find him. The rest, as they say, is history.

Scooter took the 13 year old boy to Atlanta, where he was quickly signed by Usher. By 16, Justin was the youngest male to have a hit #1 album.

Scooter Braun is one of the most successful and wealthiest, producers in the business, with a net worth of more than $400 million.

They moved to Brentwood in 2014. They spent $13.1 million on the 7,000 square foot home and then promptly gutted it for a massive remodel. Reportedly, Scooter bought the house next door to his home in 2020, from John Travolta for $18 million. The new estate has 2.25 acres, more privacy, more space, and more amenities. When you’re worth nearly half a billion dollars, two mansions doesn’t seem out of the question.

When Bieber was just getting started, one of the first things he did was buy a Los Angeles mansion for $6.5 million in 2012. He bought a seven bedroom, eight bathroom home that included a wine cellar, gourmet kitchen, elevator, and six car garage.

The time that Bieber spent there was eventful, to say the least. He had lots of loud, raucous parties that drew the ire of the neighbors. Bieber went so far as to throw eggs at a neighbor’s house at one point.

It’s no surprise that he didn’t last long at the house. What is surprising is that it took him three years before selling it to Khloe Kardashian for $7.2 million.

From that time until he settled down with Hailey, he rented homes in LA and around the world, which was probably a good idea for the maturing musician.

Arrested for Drag Racing in 2014

Justin’s success has come with a cost; growing up in the spotlight has led him to make the same stupid mistakes others do, but on a much grander scale. In January 2014, he was arrested in Miami Beach, Florida for drag racing and for being under the influence.

It was just one of several incidents the celebrity had over the course of a few years, but he got himself together and has stayed out of the back of police cars these last few years.

Montage Palmetto Bluff, Hilton Head, South Carolina

After dating in 2015, and again in 2018, Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin were married in late 2018, but didn’t have an official ceremony until 2019. And oh did they celebrate! The couple re-tied the knot in front of 154 guests at the Montage Palmetto Bluff in Bluffton, just outside Hilton Head, South Carolina.

The resort was a picture-perfect place for the photo-friendly couple to celebrate their wedding with friends and loved ones. The resort is on a gorgeous wetland, has amazing landscaped and natural features, and a Jack Nicklaus golf course.

First Beverly Hills Home

Shortly after getting together, Justin and Hailey bought an $8.5 million “transitional” mansion in Beverly Hills, on the same street as Jeff Bezo’s MASSIVE mansion compound.

The 6,100 square foot home with gorgeous pool and outdoor entertaining area was just not enough for the celebrity couple, because 18 months after purchasing it, it’s back on the market. It underwent a massive overhaul in 2018 before Bieber bought it, so whoever buys it now will have every luxury a Hollywood elite needs to get by.

Mansion in Waterloo, Canada

In August 2018, Justin spent $5 million on a 101-acre estate in Canada, near his hometown. The massive property has a large main house with five en-suite bedrooms, a movie theater, pool table room, massive kitchen, and wine cellar spread around 9,000 square feet. It even has heated (and cooled!) floors!

There’s also an equestrian center, a racing track, massive landscaped yard, and even an older, much smaller, farmhouse on the property. It sits on Puslinch Lake, not too far from Toronto.

New Mansion in Beverly Hills, California

As if a massive mansion in Canada wasn’t enough, Justin and Hailey bought a $25.8 million home in the tony Beverly Park neighborhood in September 2020. On a 2.5 acre lot, the recently-renovated home has seven bedrooms, ten bathrooms, a massive black and white entry way, dining room, infinity pool, tennis court,  outdoor pizza oven, and more.

Happy Birthday, Rihanna!

Rihanna is a global singing sensation, entrepreneur, and humanitarian. She was discovered as a teenager in Barbados and she rocketed to stardom before she was even 20 years old.

On February 20, she’ll turn 33, and she can honestly say she’s accomplished more in her short years than many do who live to old age.

Let’s take a look back on her journey as we celebrate her birthday.

Childhood home

Rihanna was raised in Bridgetown, Barbados. Her childhood was tough, and her parents divorced by the time she was a young teenager. The small concrete structure has now become a destination for superfans of the artist. The home has been repainted, and the street named in her honor, but no one lives in the residence anymore.

Home of Evan and Jackie Rogers

When she was a teenager, she was discovered by American producer Evan Rogers. He helped her move to the United States and get her first record deal with Def Jam Records. While she was still getting established, she lived with Rogers and his wife in Connecticut. The couple had a strong, and positive, influence on the young singer as she got started in her career.

“Starter” Home in Los Angeles

When she was just starting out, Rihanna bought a home in Beverly Hills, as one does. She spent nearly $7 million to buy the place, and added substantial improvements to the 8,500 square foot home.

However, it has major problems and she sold it two years later for $5 million, and sued people involved in selling the home. It was reworked and John Legend and Chrissy Teigan bought the home for $14 million. They sold it in 2020.

Barbados Condo

Rihanna stays in touch with her roots, and visits Barbados several times a year. She bought a condo in one of the fanciest resorts on the island in 2013, after staying there for a vacation.

One of eight beachfront villas, her unit has 10,000 square feet of living space, with five en suite bedrooms, a grand marble staircase entry way, and amazing concierge service at all times. It has a gorgeous, full-service pool, even though the estate is right on the beach. It set the singer and entrepreneur back $22 million, but it looks like it’s worth every penny.

New York City Penthouse

Every famous singer needs a New York City penthouse, right? Rihanna rented this one for about $40,000 per month from 2013 to 2017. It has four bedrooms, two stories, and a penthouse in downtown NYC. It has 7,000 square feet of living space, plus an extra 2,500 square feet wraparound terrace that provided some excellent views of all over downtown.

The residence was for sale off and on for a few years, most recently at $15.95 million. The price has dropped, and it looks like it might have finally sold this time.

Hollywood Hills Home

Riri bought this home for $6.9 million in 2017, but it’s unclear whether or not she still owns it, as she moved to London in 2018. However, this gorgeous 7,000 square foot mansion right at the base of a hill, seems like a great fit for Rihanna, with the classic Mediterranean style blended with very modern accents such as floor to ceiling windows and metal finishings. It has a massive master suite and three additional en suite bedrooms, an infinity pool, and a spa.

Hopefully she kept this one in her real estate portfolio, because it’s a great place to relax alone or with friends.

Rental Home in London

Over the years, Rihanna has lived in so many properties, it’s hard to know for sure where she resides at any given time. From 2018 to 2020, she lived under the radar in a massive, exclusive mansion in London to be closer to her billionaire boyfriend. But when they broke up, she moved back to the US.

The home is currently on the market for around $40 million, and has a massive kitchen, home gym, sauna, massive master suite, elevator, and security system. It also has a gorgeous landscaped yard with plenty of private parking, and privacy, for the discriminating millionaire in the market for a London getaway.

Celebrity Weddings and Break Ups in 2020

Happy Valentine’s Day! In honor of the annual holiday celebrating love, let’s look back on the celebrity romances that blossomed, and those that failed, in 2020.

Kathy Griffin

Kathy Griffin started the New Year off with a bang, marrying her longtime partner Randy Bick. The couple were married in their home just after midnight January 1, 2020, by Lily Tomlin, in a ceremony that was apparently full of laughter and love. The couple had been together on and off since 2012.

In December 2020, they sold their longtime Bel-Air home for $14 million, after paying $10.4 million for it a few years ago. The Mediterranean mansion is in a hilly gated community, has eight bedrooms and 12 bathrooms, and more than 13,000 square feet of living space. And a pool, of course.

The couple bought a smaller, beach-side home in Malibu for $8.8 million just after selling her Bel-Air home. The 8,200 square foot home has an open floor plan, high end appliances in a chef’s kitchen, and of course, an infinity pool.

Tim Tebow

Famed quarterback, sports broadcaster, minor league baseball player, and Christian, Tim Tebow married his love Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters in her native South Africa in January. The former football star and 2017 Miss Universe started dating in 2018 and got engaged in 2019.

They will live in a home Tim bought in Florida in 2019 for $3 million. It’s his second home in the gated Jacksonville community. This 8,000 square foot home sits on nearly 1.5 acres, has five bedrooms and 5.5 bathrooms, a five car garage, a home theater, and a saltwater pool. In the last week of December, the couple sold their “starter” home in the same neighborhood for just under $2 million.

Scarlett Johansson

One of Hollywood’s leading actors, Scarlett’s personal life has been as active as her professional. In October 2020, she married comedian and writer Colin Jost after dating for three years.

As the couple have lots of ties to NYC, it’s likely they spend a lot of time at the $56 million home Scarlett bought in Palisades, New York in 2018. The 4,000 square foot home sits on nearly an acre of land, with a pool and gorgeous landscaping.

The couple each own multiple homes, so they will have ample choices of where to set up their life as newlyweds.

John Cena

Wrestler and actor John Cena married Shay Shariatzadeh in October, 2020 in a private ceremony in Tampa, Florida. The couple have been dating for nearly two years, and were engaged in early 2020.

Shay is a product manager in the video security field, based in Vancouver. But the couple is likely living in John Cena’s mansion in Land O’Lakes, Florida, just outside Tampa.

The $5 million home in a gated community has indoor and outdoor pools, gorgeous landscaping, and 11,000 square feet of living space. It also includes room for his fleet of sports cars, which includes a Ford GT valued at more than $1 million! Cena has lived here for about 15 years, doing a ton of renovations and upgrades over the years to make it even more epic and to fit his unique needs better.

Not everyone had a banner 2020, and a lot of celebrity relationships didn’t make it to the end of the year.

Vanessa Hudgens

The petite actress and her longtime boyfriend Austin Butler didn’t make it very long in 2020. The couple split after nine years in January 2020. The 33 year old actress has maintained an upbeat attitude this year, in spite of the breakup, and is still living in her Los Feliz, Californian mansion.

She bought the real estate in December 2018 for $5 million, and Vanessa isn’t shy about posting pictures of her home on her popular Instagram page. The 3,100 square foot home has high-end chef’s kitchen, gorgeous dining room, three bedrooms and four bathrooms, and a lovely outdoor pool.

Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis

Olivia Wilde has led an interesting life in her 36 years, including being married to an Italian prince. But for the last nine years, she’s been in a relationship with fellow actor Jason Sudeikis. The couple have two children together, and had been engaged for several years.

But, in November 2020, it was clear that the two had broken up earlier in the year. And as of January 2021, Olivia has been seen dating Harry Styles, with them spending time together in public.

The couple have lived in several places around Los Angeles, but in 2019, the pair bought a home in the Silver Lake area. They paid $3.5 million for a 1920s Spanish style home with 2,500 square feet, four bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. It has a small pool in the backyard, along with gorgeous views of the nearby mountains and reservoir.

It’s not clear yet whether the couple will sell the property or if one of them will continue to live here.

Offset and Cardi B

Cardi B and Offset are a powerhouse rap/hip hop couple. The couple secretly wed in 2017, and had a baby girl in 2018. The couple have had a rocky relationship, breaking up several times over the course of the last few years.

In September 2020, they announced they were separated, but later in the year, they have once again reconciled.

In spite of their frequent ups and downs, the duo own several homes, including a gorgeous mansion in the Buckhead area of Atlanta. It was listed for around $5.8 million. The three story home has five bedrooms, underground gun range, 1,800 bottle wine cellar, massive children’s playroom, and library. And a pool, Italian landscaping, and fountains.

Tracy Morgan

Tracy Morgan met Megan Wollover in 2011, and they married in 2015.  However, after five years of marriage and one child together, both parties filed for divorce in the summer of 2020. In spite of their best efforts, the divorce has become acrimonious, and the couple have a long way to go before making the divorce final.

Morgan, who is worth well over $50 million, suffered a major car accident caused by a Walmart truck driver in 2014. He was awarded a significant cash settlement, and with that money, he bought a $14 million brick mansion in the tony Alpine, New Jersey. The home has a gorgeous, two-story entry way, hand-laid herringbone wood floor, seven bedrooms and ten bathrooms, bowling alley, elevator, and five car garage.

It’s unknown whether Tracy or Megan will stay in the home or sell it as part of the divorce.
