Eugenia Mae Royal is the widow of C.C. Royal, the original developer of Kiawah Island. C.C. Royal built the causeway connecting Kiawah to the mainland and named it after his wife, Eugenia Avenue.

Royal purchased Kiawah Island in the mid-1900s for $125,000 and began selling oceanfront lots for $10,000. In 1974 Royal sold the island to the Kuwaiti Investment Corporation for $17 million.
