The Harecastle Tunnel is on the Trent and Mersey Canal near the town of Tunstall in Stoke-on-Trent.
The tunnel is 2.6km (1.6 miles in length and at one time was the longest canal tunnel in the country. This tunnel constructed by Thomas Telford runs parallel to the early tunnel built by James Brindley.
Both tunnels run under Harecastle Hill which is the highest point in the Stoke-on-Trent area, rising up to 195 metres (640 feet).
