Naval Station Norfolk, in Norfolk, Virginia, is the world's largest naval base. It occupies 4 miles of waterfront and 11 miles of pier and harbor and serves as the home port of the U.S. Navy's Fleet Forces Command. The base has been operational since 1917, shortly after the United States joined World War I.
