He had a distinguished career in the United States Public Health Service and the United States Coast Guard where he practiced Internal Medicine for three years in Alaska. He returned to Los Angeles and completed his residency in Neurology at UCLA School of Medicine and became Chief Resident in 1974.
Dr. Shimizu has been Assistant Clinical Professor of Neurology at UCLA School of Medicine since 1975 and a Clinical professor at USC since 2000. Dr.Shimizu is a trained provider of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Therapy and treats patients with depression using NeuroStar TMS Therapy.
Dr. Shimizu served as Chairman of Neurology/Senior Staff at Saint John’s Medical Center and Santa Monica Medical Center.
