Edward Julius Berwind was the founder of the Berwind-White Coal Mining Company. He was head of the company from 1886 until 1930.

Berwind built The Elms, designed by architect Horace Trumbauer, completed in 1901. The estate was constructed from 1899 to 1901 and cost approximately 1.5 million dollars to build (Roughly $380M in 2010).
