Albert Tower

Albert Tower was erected as a memorial to mark the first Royal visit to the town of Ramsey on 20th September 1847 when the Royal Yacht anchored in Ramsey Bay and H.R.H Prince Albert came ashore and ascended the high ground behind the town to view the town and the bay in its full glory.

The tower was built following a public meeting where it was decided to set up ‘a fitting Memorial of the Royal Visit. It was built to the design of G. W. Buck, C.E.

The tower is constructed of Claughbane quarry slate with South Barrule quoins and lintels and was opened on 24th July 1849 by Deemster Drinkwater.

Over the front door of the tower is a plaque with the following inscription:

ALBERT TOWER

Erected on the spot where

H.R.H. PRINCE ALBERT

stood to view

Ramsey and its neighbourhood,

during the visit of Her Most Gracious Majesty

QUEEN VICTORIA

to Ramsey Bay,
