Pioneertown, located in the hills above Morongo Valley, was built as Hayden Movie Ranch in the 1950s, and was used for many Gene Autry western TV shows. Though it is rarely used as a location these days, as the golden days of Westerns ended some time ago, Pioneertown is notable as people began moving into the set buildings, even constructing homes behind the false fronts of the main street. So Pioneertown, built as a set, became a town. The bowling alley, said to have been built to give Mr. Autry something to do in the evenings, is still functioning as a bowling alley.
