The superstar purchased this Upper East Side townhouse in 1970. She was essentially forced to buy a townhouse, despite her best wishes, after being denied apartment rentals due to her Jewish religion (which was still commonplace at the time) and rejected by co-op boards, citing her as 'a flamboyant type', would 'probably give a lot of parties', and the belief that she would build a recording studio in her apartment. Even personal reference letters from Governor Nelson Rockefeller, Attorney General Louis Lefkowitz, and Mayor John Lindsay would not gain her approval by the strict co-op boards. Streisand would never formally move into her townhouse, but would use it to host fundraisers for political figures and activists, before she moved to Hollywood to film 'Funny Girl' and "Hello, Dolly!'.
