James Buchanan Duke († 1925) was a tobacco and electric power industrialist best known for the introduction of modern cigarette manufacture and marketing, and his involvement with Duke University.
In 1952, the family donated the building to New York University's Institute of Fine Arts.

why didn't doris duke just keep the mansion and live in it after her mother died instead of giving the family home to a art institute?
