Castle MacGarrett was built and owned by the Browne family (the Guinness empire), who had occupied the land for over five centuries. The castle was sold and turned into a nursing home in 1965 until it was sold again for development in 2006. As of 2023, it remains vacant. Tara Browne, a key figure of London's swinging sixties, grew up here. He died in a car accident in 1966. He was the inspiration behind The Beatles' song A Day in the Life.
