He was also a 2-term U.S. Senator from Minnesota and the Democratic Party nominee for president in 1984 against the incumbent, Republican Ronald Reagan. Later, during the administration of Democratic President Bill Clinton, he served as the U.S. Ambassador to Japan from 1993-1996.
